Nationale Opera & Ballet - La damnation de Faust

Date 09.06.2027 / 27.06.2027

In La Damnation de Faust, a co-production with Dutch National Opera, choreographer and director Nanine Linning and visual artist Levi van Veluw take audiences deep into the inner world of a man who completely loses himself. Inspired by the poetic opera by Hector Berlioz, they reimagine this timeless story in a striking new form. In this compelling interpretation, La Damnation de Faust unfolds as a psychological descent into Faust’s mind: a gripping journey through depression, doubt, temptation and obsession.

Faust finds himself at a mental breaking point when Méphistophélès appears, offering promises of happiness, intoxication and escape. Together they are drawn into an ever-shifting landscape of seductive fantasies, terrifying visions and inner turmoil. As the boundaries gradually dissolve, one question remains: what is real, and what exists only within Faust’s imagination? In this large-scale production, music, language, spatial design and movement merge into one powerful theatrical experience. Joined by the chorus of the Dutch National Opera, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Nieuw Amsterdams Kinderkoor, Scapino’s dancers bring Faust’s inner struggle vividly to life. Bodies transform into living sculptures, while immersive installations create a disorienting environment where order and chaos constantly coexist. Levi van Veluw’s artworks make Faust’s thoughts, fears and desires tangible, transporting audiences from one world to another.

La Damnation de Faust is a breathtaking confrontation with the human psyche that leaves a lasting impression.
